Assateague Island on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is home to beautiful beaches, crashing ocean waves, and the famous wild ponies that roam freely across the island from sunrise to sunset. From breathtaking early morning sunrises to colorful evening skies and even the glowing Milky Way at night, the island offers endless opportunities for adventure and photography.
Rich in history and natural beauty, Assateague truly feels like it belongs to the ponies. Protected and left wild, these horses wander the beaches, campgrounds, and dunes searching for vegetation — and sometimes any food left unattended. With no barriers to contain them, it’s not uncommon for ponies to walk directly through campsites, stand outside tents, or even prevent campers from leaving until they move along. Visitors are required to stay at least 40 feet away for safety, as these animals are powerful and unpredictable despite their calm appearance.
When photographing the ponies, I use a 500mm lens or greater to safely capture close-up images while keeping a respectful distance. Experiencing these wild horses in their natural habitat, with the sound of the ocean in the background, is what makes Assateague Island one of the most unforgettable destinations on the East Coast.
Legends tell many stories about how the wild horses first arrived on the island. One of the most popular tales claims the horses survived a shipwreck from a 17th-century Spanish vessel and swam ashore. Historians, however, believe early colonists may have brought domesticated horses to the island and released them to avoid fencing laws and livestock taxes.
To this day, the island remains filled with history and mystery surrounding the ponies’ true origins. Many believe the horses were introduced to the barrier islands during the 17th century, much like other islands along the East Coast. Today, the herds are separated by a fence dividing the Maryland and Virginia sides of the island.
The ponies still rule the island wild and free — and they know it. If food is left unattended, they will quickly wander into campsites searching for a snack, sometimes trampling tents and personal belongings along the way. Visitors should always secure food and respect the ponies’ space.
Be sure to follow the park rules and never attempt to mingle with the horses, even though some online posts may make it seem harmless. These animals are protected and completely wild. Visitors are required to stay at least 40 feet away at all times, as the ponies can become aggressive and may charge if they feel threatened. During one of my photography trips, I remained at the proper distance when a horse suddenly walked toward me, giving me enough time to safely move away. If a pony begins approaching you, it is your responsibility to back away and give it space. Never corner a horse, especially on the beach — always leave an open path for the animal to move freely if it chooses. Remember, this is their island, and they deserve respect.
The ponies also roam through parking lots and along the roads, often walking between vehicles. Never reach out to touch or feed them from your car. They can bite, kick, or cause damage to vehicles if startled or irritated. Drivers should also use caution and avoid speeding, as ponies have been known to suddenly cross the road. Unfortunately, accidents involving vehicles and horses have occurred on the island, sometimes resulting in serious damage and injury.
