Carnival Cruise Balcony Rooms: Is It Worth It? My Experience at Sea

When I sail with Carnival, I always choose a balcony stateroom. You really can’t go wrong with having your own private space and a breath of fresh ocean air whenever you want it. There’s something special about sitting out on your balcony, stretching out in a chair, maybe even drifting off to sleep as the sound of the waves rolls alongside the ship.

Sitting there with a glass of wine or your favorite drink in hand just makes the moment even better. It’s one of the most relaxing feelings—no stress, no bills, just time to disconnect and be present. The views alone make it worth it, from watching the deep blue sea stretch endlessly ahead to catching stunning sunrises, glowing sunsets, and even the quiet beauty of the ocean under a dark night sky.

From experience, I’ve found that midship balcony rooms on the 7th or 8th deck offer the best balance. You’re far enough from the dining areas and engine spaces to avoid excess noise, making it a quieter, more peaceful place to fully enjoy the experience.

Balcony staterooms do come at a higher price than interior cabins, so it really comes down to what fits your budget—whether that’s an inside room or a room with a window view. That said, once you experience a balcony, it’s hard to go back—it’s just that enjoyable.

The rooms themselves are well-equipped, typically featuring a safe, a small refrigerator, and flexible sleeping arrangements. Depending on the layout, you’ll find queen-size beds that can convert into singles, along with options like pull-out couches or even bunk beds to accommodate additional guests.

The bathrooms are designed with convenience in mind, typically featuring a stand-up shower with adjustable temperature control. On select ships, you’ll also find accessible staterooms with larger bathrooms that provide plenty of space for mobility. For example, on the Carnival Horizon, there are accessible balcony rooms that offer a more open layout, making it easier to move around comfortably. These rooms include a spacious shower and are fully wheelchair-friendly, without sacrificing the comfort or experience of having a private balcony.

To book your cruise, it’s a good idea to speak with your travel agent to see what’s currently available. Once you find the right room, you can usually place a deposit—often around $100—to secure it. This holds your stateroom, whether it’s accessible or standard, and ensures you don’t miss the chance to sail to the destination islands of your choice.

Also with Carnival, you can use your folio or VIFP number to check for discounted rates on future cruises. Over time, this can unlock special offers and reduced pricing based on your sailing history.

If you spend time in the casino, that can also work in your favor. Players often receive targeted promotions and offers for future sailings, sometimes including reduced fares or onboard perks. These incentives can really add up over time, making it more affordable to cruise again with Carnival while enjoying the experience on board.

Cruise Ship Rules You Should Never Break (Avoid Fines, Bans & Legal Trouble)

Everyone looks forward to stepping aboard their chosen cruise ship, but it’s important to remember that rules are in place to keep everyone safe and ensure an enjoyable experience. Many passengers don’t realize they’ve broken a rule until it’s too late—I’ve seen plenty of situations online that could have easily been avoided. Before you sail, take a few minutes to review your cruise line’s guidelines so you don’t run into unnecessary problems.

It’s also important to stay flexible. Things don’t always go as planned, especially when it comes to weather. Ports and excursions may be canceled for safety reasons, and while that can be disappointing, it’s beyond your control. A little patience and preparation can go a long way in helping you still enjoy your trip.

Be sure to check your cruise line’s official website for a complete list of rules and policies.

Keep in mind that certain actions can lead to serious consequences, including fines ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars, removal from the ship, bans from future sailings, or even legal trouble depending on the situation.

Some common rules to follow include:

  • Do not feed birds such as seagulls. They can become aggressive, steal food, and create a mess around the ship.
  • Do not touch or feed wildlife during excursions, including sea turtles, dolphins, or whales.
  • Wildlife violations can carry serious penalties. Fines for feeding wildlife from a cruise ship can range from $500 to $36,000 or more, depending on the location and severity of the offense. Food items like bread and crackers may seem harmless, but they can cause significant health problems for marine animals and birds.
  • Avoid any kind of physical altercation—fighting is strictly prohibited and can result in immediate removal from the ship.

Passengers involved in fights will be detained by ship security. Depending on the severity, they may be confined to their cabin, held in a secure area, or placed in the ship’s brig for the remainder of the cruise. In many cases, they will be disembarked at the next port and required to pay for their own travel home. They may also receive a permanent ban from the cruise line, and possibly others. Some cruise lines, such as Carnival, can impose fines of up to $500 or more.

Assault and battery at sea fall under maritime law. Security may detain individuals until local authorities, or even federal agencies like the FBI, take over. Offenders may also be held responsible for property damage. In extreme cases, a ship may reroute to remove passengers involved in serious incidents—costs that can run into thousands of dollars and may be charged to those responsible.

Additionally, other passengers may pursue civil action, seeking compensation for medical expenses, damages, or losses caused by disruptions.

Following these guidelines will help ensure a safe, smooth, and enjoyable cruise for you and everyone onboard. Visit your cruise line rules and regulations.
